TEENAGERS will be banned from having Botox or collagen injections under sweeping changes aimed at reining in the burgeoning cosmetic surgery industry.
The Sunday Telegraph can reveal the State Government is planning to introduce regulations making it more difficult for people under 18 to undergo purely cosmetic procedures.

The changes have been personally driven by Premier Morris Iemma, who was disturbed when Big Brother contestant Krystal Forscutt, 20, promoted her breast-enhancement surgery.

His intervention follows instances of teenagers as young as 15 turning up in cosmetic-surgery clinics across Sydney, requesting 'Jessica Simpson' noses, breast implants, liposuction and Botox and collagen injections.

Under the proposed changes, teenagers will be required to obtain a referral from a GP before seeing a plastic surgeon - and to undergo counselling.

Surgeons will require the consent of the teenager's parents and will be forced to offer a minimum one-month cooling-off period before a procedure can be undertaken."

Free plastic bags in Victoria will be banned from 2009 with shoppers forced to pay a 10 cent levy on single-use bags.

The ban is one of 150 sustainability initiatives announced by the government today in the lead-up to the state election.

The bag ban will apply from January 1, 2009, if, as expected, voluntary efforts to phase out plastic bags don't succeed.

It will not apply to biodegradable bags, to small retailers or in situations where bags are required for health and safety reasons."

"Children's author J.K. Rowling has revealed that at least two characters will die in the seventh and final instalment of her bestselling Harry Potter series, but was careful not to say who.

Children and adults are expected to rush and buy the final Harry Potter novel in their tens of millions when it is complete, and if the publication of the sixth book is anything to go by, secrecy surrounding the plot will be tight.

Rowling has already said that the final chapter of the seventh book was written long ago.

'The final chapter is hidden away, although it's now changed very slightly,' she said in an interview broadcast on Monday on Channel 4. 'One character got a reprieve, but I have to say two die that I didn't intend to die.'

When asked to be more specific, she added: 'No, I'm not going to commit myself, because I don't want the hate mail or anything else.'

She did explain that she understood an author's desire to kill off the main character of a successful series.

'I've never been tempted to kill him (Harry) off before the end of book seven, because I always planned seven books and that's where I want to go.

'I can completely understand, however, the mentality of an author who thinks 'Well, I'm going to kill them off because that means there can be no non-author-written sequels ... so it will end with me, and after I'm dead and gone they won't be able to bring back the character'.'

Rowling, 40, wrote the first Harry Potter adventure when she was an unemployed single mother, but has gone on to become one of the richest authors in history with a personal fortune estimated at more than $1 billion.

I got invited to join some most awesome artist gallery/showcase site.. by Rik from Psygarden.be

its a total honour, especially for him to chase me to get some stuff ready. The site Psygarden was online a few years ago, but i think it closed down for a bit, cuz of the time it was taking to maintain it, plus Rik had personal stuff to care for (like work and earning money!).

Now he has re-launched Psygardens with a much better look and aspect. Its really cool feeling when i get invited to submit or work together with crews from all around the world.

Another thing i notice though is that i seem to get invitations from people overseas - not so much from Australia - which is pretty sad. Here i feel like everyone sticks to their own group, and get all their immediate friends to work/help them - instead of spreading the doors and windows open and inviting new fresh people around.. also in Australia i feel like its a 'boys group'
if its got to do with psy and graphics, etc..

Developed by UK company LoveLabs, the plug 'n' play device comes with a number of cables linking a small rectangular control device to an MP3, headphones and a variety of vibrating attachments.

LoveLabs is not the first company to create an add-on product aimed at capitalising on the success of Apple's iPod music player.

IN the early hours of tomorrow week, Nguyen Tuong Van will be led from his cell to the yard where he will be hanged. He may struggle or he may walk with composure. He may be given relaxants to help him stay calm. The hangman will place a hood over his head and the noose around his neck. At 6am, the trap door will open and his body will drop and hang until it stops writhing.

When his lifeless being is taken down, his face will be purple, engorged with blood, his neck covered with lacerations, his swollen tongue protruding out of his mouth and his eyes displaced. Involuntary ejections of urine and faeces will stain his clothes.

Such is the gore awaiting Nguyen that no one, not even his family, is allowed to watch the killing. Civility and human decency prohibits us in Singapore from making such executions public. But hanging behind closed doors doesn't make the violence go away, it merely conceals it.

Make no mistake: Nguyen is neither a hero nor a martyr. He is a felon whose crime could have ruined, ended even, the lives of many. For that, my Government says, his life must be taken. The logic follows that because a drug courier's deed causes, or has the potential of causing, the death of a fellow human being, the state has the right to, in return, take the life of the perpetrator.

If such is the reasoning, why then does Singapore continue to allow the sale of cigarettes?

Nicotine found in tobacco is a stimulant and its addictive properties have been likened to that of opium and heroin. Its carcinogenic effects have caused the deaths of millions and caused hundreds of billions of dollars to be spent on health care. If we don't criminalise the sale of cigarettes, much less hang producers and sellers of nicotine, why do we execute peddlers of other types of drugs?

It's official - Greeks do it better and Aussies are average when it comes to action between the sheets.

In what it claims to be the biggest ever study of global sex lives, condom manufacturer Durex interviewed almost half a million people around the world, with surprising results.

Of the 41 countries studied, Australians ranked equal 16th in a league table on the number of sexual liaisons per person per year with a 'score' of 108.

Topping the table was Greece with 138, ahead of Croatia at 134 and bottom of the league was Japan with just 45.

Turks like to share their love most widely, with an average of 14.5 different partners, with Australia coming in second at 13.2 while the Indians are the most faithful with an average of just three.

Indeed, some 58 per cent of Turks admitted to an extra-marital affair, with Norwegians (70 per cent) having the most one-night stands.

In what may be a reflection upon Australian men, use of vibrators Down Under was 46 per cent, only just behind pacesetting Taiwan which is abuzz at 47 per cent.

Meet the real Calendar Girls - Fashion - Entertainment - smh.com.au: "TO a global skin-care company it's just a marketing campaign, but for three Sydney women the chance to get their gear off for the camera is a triumph of courage over adversity.

Along with 5000 women from around the nation, they entered a competition to be pin-up girls in an underwear calendar that celebrates women of all shapes and sizes.

The three friends, who have each struggled with long-term illness, say showing off their curves clad only in bras and knickers would help them accept their own bodies as beautiful.

Nineteen women have won a spot in the 2006 Dove Curvy Calendar, including two mother-grandmother combos, a former ballerina and a pregnant 38-year-old.

The 'real' women concept has already been a winner for Dove in the UK and the US, where pictures of six ordinary girls in white knickers and bras have graced billboards.

And the campaign looks set to be just as big in Australia, with Dove spokeswoman Briar Taylor admitting the company was shocked when 5000 photo entries flooded in. 'It shows that Australian girls are really buying into the campaign to fight social pressure to look perfect,' she said. 'These girls are really proud of their curves.'

When mates Marina Veljanoska, 29, Debbie Theo, 27, and Nicola Magiros, 29, donned matching underwear and hit the self-timer on the camera, they never dreamed the picture would win them a spot together in the calendar.

'Just because someone is overweight or has an illness, they still have beauty inside,' said Nicola, a Brookvale make-up artist who has faced 15 rounds of surgery to treat a birth defect.

Brookvale TAFE student Debbie, whose weight has jumped 20 kilograms in the past six years due to the side effects of medication, said: 'This is a great boost for me as I have had to completely redefine my self-image from being a size eight.'

Feminism set out to free women from roles imposed on them by males, but a new book accuses women of building a new, self-imposed prison by acting like sex objects and tolerating sexism.

In Female Chauvinist Pigs: Women and the Rise of Raunch Culture, New York Magazine contributing editor Ariel Levy slams both celebrities who act like porn stars, and the women and girls who want to be like them.

Levy says it's absurd that stars such as heiress Paris Hilton and singers Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera - who dress like 'hos', fake orgasms in video clips and pose for men's magazines - have become role models. She says they exude a commercialised concept of sex that is about performing for men and has little to do with their own sexuality.

Levy says trends in everyday life, such as teens who wear skimpy clothes to school and female bosses who bully employees, make poor substitutes for true liberation.

'If male chauvinist pigs were guys who treated women like pieces of meat,' says Levy, 'then female chauvinist pigs are women who make sex objects of other women, and of themselves, and think of this as empowerment.

Canadian researchers have discovered that smoking marijuana could improve a person's memory and mood.

A team at the University of Saskatchewan headed by Xia Zhang found that injections of a potent HU210 synthetic substance that mimics the active ingredients in cannabis increases the production of neurons in the hippocampus area of the brain in rats.

The region is associated with learning and memory, as well as anxiety and depression. Zhang and his colleagues believe that these negative emotions are caused by a lack of cell growth in this region of the brain.

Other recent studies showed growth in brain cells in the hippocampus lessened anxiety and depression.

In contrast, other recreational drugs such as alcohol, nicotine, cocaine and heroin suppress growth of new brain cells.

'The implication is that smoking marijuana is a good thing,' Zhang said.

The discovery may eventually lead to the next blockbuster antidepressant drug treatment, he said.

'It is possible this might overtake Prozac,' he said.

Of course, it has only been proven in rats so far. And HU210 is a purified substance 100 times stronger than the active ingredient tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) in marijuana.

The study will be published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation next month.

Carter discovered and excavated the tomb of Egyptian pharaoh King Tutankhamen. Carter got his start as an artist, tracing Egyptian hieroglyphics for others, before becoming an archaeologist himself. His search for the tomb of King Tut took nearly a decade, including a lengthy interruption during World War I, and was supported financially by George Herbert, the earl of Carnarvon. Carter discovered the tomb of Tut on 4 November 1922 and opened the tomb after Lord Carnarvon's arrival at the site on the 26th of November. Ironically, Tutankhamen had been practically unknown before the discovery, but news coverage of Carter's amazing find made 'King Tut' a household name.

Extra credit: Lord Carnarvon died of pneumonia in 1923, reinforcing the legend of a curse placed on those who had disturbed Tut's tomb. However, Carter himself lived to the age of 64 before dying a natural death in England.

An Australian researcher believes love in all its forms may be able to slow the biological clock.

'Having love in your life will improve your chances of living a long life,' said Mark Cohen, founding professor of complementary medicine at RMIT University in Melbourne.

'When you have love in your life it influences the laws of nature to ... reduce the experience of time.

'So if you're doing an activity that you love to do, whether it's making paper aeroplanes or gardening or looking into the eyes of your lover, you get moments when time seems to stop, or it seems like five minutes but it's really been an hour.'

Professor Cohen said research backed up his claim. When researchers studied rabbits on high-cholesterol diets in the US, they were perplexed to find one group lived about 60 per cent longer than the other on the same food. The only difference between the groups was that the longer-lived rabbits were fed by an assistant who cuddled and talked to them.

A study of 1000 Israeli men with heart conditions found the relationship with their wives affected their disease. 'The men who felt that they were loved by their wives had a 50 per cent reduction in their angina and cardiac disease,' Professor Cohen said.

He told an international conference on healthy ageing in Brisbane that love accounted for the fact that women generally lived longer than men.

'Women are working with children who need love; their major work is to love,' Professor Cohen said. 'Women are the major carers on the planet ... it makes sense that women would live longer because they have more love in their life.'
